JOLIE HOLLAND To Do Residency At Union Pool in Brooklyn, NY

New Album Wine Dark Sea In Stores May 20

What all good music has in common is that it captures and conveys both the nature that is in us and the nature that surrounds us. Anemones and cockles in tidal pools at dusk on unknown but recognizable tidal pools seen with closed or open eyes. When a breeze of soft magic caresses, we care not where it came from or where it goes. Jolie Holland’s music captures and conveys, and it is one of those breezes.     — NICK TOSCHES

Iconoclastic singer, writer and performer Jolie Holland will be playing a series of shows at Union Pool in Brooklyn, NY on 4/29, 5/6 & 5/13.   The performances will be in anticipation of her new album, Wine Dark Sea, to be released on Anti- on 5/20.

The shows will feature the same avant-soul band that Holland put together for Wine Dark Sea, an ensemble that brings visceral noise and downtown experimental aesthetics to the timeless medium of the American song.  A symphony of distorted guitars envelop updated field hollers and Buddy Holly-style raveups on songs like “On And On” and “Dark Days”; skronking saxophones elevate the Stax stomp of the first single “Waiting For The Sun”.  She testifies with the best on her stripped down cover of Joe Tex’s “The Love You Save”. She growls, swoops and soars on the western swing travelogue, “Route 30”; the album also features half-sung poetry, spooky soundscapes, tender ballads;  in short, Wine Dark Sea is her most challenging yet visceral and joyful album ever.

Arranged by Holland and performed live in the studio, Wine Dark Sea begs to be heard in concert; fans will have a chance to do just that in the intimate setting of Brooklyn’s Union Pool.
