THE COUP RELEASE EXHILERATING STREET DANCE VIDEO

Long Awaited New Album Sorry To Bother You Out  October 30th

Revolutionary Bay Area group The Coup has just released a video for their song “Land Of Seven Billion Dances.” The track is from The Coup’s highly anticipated new album Sorry To Bother You out this October 30th via Anti- Records. The record merges danceable beats, punk urgency and the astute social commentary of hip-hop to craft a defiantly unique sound which draws from the past but never sounds anything but futuristic.

The video was shot on the streets of Oakland by Yoram Savion of Yak Films, a team of young filmmakers dedicated to youth-led multimedia production which provide a voice for resistance and an alternative to played-out mainstream media. The clip features The Coup accompanied by some hyper kinetic dancing by Bay Area crews performing four distinct types of dance.

The first dance style featured is “Turf Dancing” which uses intricate body movements to express emotions and tell stories. Here it is presented by Oakland crew Turf Feinz who gained fame in 2010 when their "Dancing in the Rain" video went viral. The second style is “Jooking” performed by Ladia Yates featuring fast and intricate footwork. The third is “B-boying” performed by B-boy Lucid from the Circle of Fire crew. The fourth is “House” represented by Zulu Nasty from LA.

As The Coup’s vocalist and lyricist Boots Riley explains, "In Oakland, dancing is something that happens all the time- anywhere and everywhere that people play their music loud. It's always been a part of the culture, as I'm sure is the same with most communities of color. We have our own styles here in the Bay Area, and just like any other art form that has ever existed, they're a hybrid of inspiration from other areas and innovation of new moves. The dancers I picked are some of the shining lights of the Bay Area. They have reputations that are well deserved. The new Coup album, Sorry To Bother You is full of music doing new, weird, and exciting shit. I wanted dancers that are doing new, weird, and exciting shit.”

The track “Land Of Seven Billion Dances” is a defiant and danceable anthem of collective resistance. As Riley says, "This song was a one take jake.  Drums and guitar, then we added some crazy keyboard sounds. (Co producer) Damion Gallegos and I got the oh-so-good-and-dirty sound on those drums by using a thoroughly thrashed Shure Brothers ribbon mic. We left it broken and turned it up in the mix, because it sounded amazing that way. The video game sounds at the end come from a little toy called a Pocket Piano. It’s a fun little ditty about the people smashing this system and creating one in which the people democratically control the wealth we create. There are 7 Billion people on this planet. We all have our individual ways of dancing through life, but with a political movement, we all dance together.”
