Watch Man Man and Islands SXSW Performance on Stereogum.com

This South By, Man Man were good good (last time we make that joke). We caught the face-painted Philly boys twice this week -- both outdoors -- once at Cedar Street Courtyard as part of the Anti- showcase (great), then a late-night set out at the way-off-the-beaten-path Scoot Inn for the Solid PR showcase (even better). We managed to get some video footage of Rabbit Habits standouts at the Cedar Street show -- raucous, organ-pumping "Mister Jung Stuffed" and kazoo funk-vamp jam "Hurly/Burly." Impressive beard growth, dudes. Can we do a top five bands of SXSW? OK, cool. Man Man makes the list. Meet "Mr. Jung": -Stereogum.com

It's in the blogger code to toss out superlatives with reckless abandon, but really -- we weren't lying when called Islands set at Cedar St. the best of this fest. (OK, maybe Fuck Buttons @ Volume today is a contender.) Yeah that's Nick strangling Subtitle with a drum mallet, and yes Nick was wearing white face. (Move over List Christee, there's no monopoly on theatricality.) Islands stormed the Cedar St. Courtyard with black outfits and a perfect mix of Return To The Sea + their excellent upcoming Arm's Way. But don't take these words for it: Stereogum videographer Matt Neatock (newly converted Islands fan #1) fought the crowd to capture three tunes of new and old. -Stereogum.com
MAN MAN: FEATURE ON PITCHFORK AND HEADLINING TOUR ANNOUNCED

MAN MAN ANNOUNCE HEADLINING TOUR IN SUPPORT OF ANTI- RECORDS DEBUT RABBIT HABITS

(Jan 7) Philly's favorite sons Man Man are readying a three week tour, scheduled to kick off on March 4th in Baltimore MD. Famous for kinetic live shows that include playing everything from apples to zithers, the band, likened to "an epic street battle between two Vietnam war vets fighting over who gets to sleep on the sewer grate" by Pitchfork Media, are set to release their much anticipated Anti- Records debut Rabbit Habits on April 8th.

The tour, which includes support act the Extraordinairies, will find Man Man entrenched at the legendary weekend-long South By Southwest music festival in Austin TX, where their riotous junkyard-carny paroxysm of guitars, woozy horns and flying spoons will be performed nightly. A month after the release of Rabbit Habits, Man Man will also perform at the glitzy ATP Vs. Pitchfork festival in the United Kingdom, playing alongside the likes of Of Montreal, Ween and Hot Chip.

Man Man has honed their live show down to a sassy science, touring with such indie heavyweights as Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire and the Fiery Furnaces. In a quest to keep the energy flowing, and perhaps to keep from having to brawl with the wise-asses who yell things in quiet moments, Man Man do not break between songs, but rather move from one song to another, commandeering and discarding any of number of the instruments lying at their feet as the mood strikes and the music dictates.

Rabbit Habits, Man Man's third, marks their debut for the acclaimed Anti- Records, home of such notables as Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Neko Case. Successfully capturing the raw spirit and essence of a Man Man live show, the record is the end product of the efforts of a band who are earnestly saying something important, even if you can't always make out the words over the blare of the sousaphone.

ANTI SIGNS THE INCOMPARABLE MAN MAN, "A WEIRD, RAUCOUS DELIGHT" (THE PHOENIX)

Hailing from Philadelphia, Man Man are an astonishingly original quintet who have found the perfect berth for their gypsy-swamp-rock-carny-soul sound at the equally singular Anti- Records, home to other such illustrious iconoclasts as Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Neko Case.

The band had the following to say about the signing:
Honus (vocals/keys/etc): "Championship Rings!"
Chang Wang (sax/etc): "Wow! Yes!"
Sergei Sogay (bass/etc): "Warm Socks!"
Cougar (guitar/trumpet): "Pizza Party!"
Pow Pow (drums/etc): "Ladies Please!"

Man Man have been understatedly described by NPR as "quirky and mischievous... often with old-world instrumentation and plenty of theatrics." The pre-eminent online music publication Pitchforkmedia.com more extravagantly enthuses, "Man Man's power isn't derived from the genres they stumble across, or the maniac light in their eyes, or the sweat pooling in their beards. It's the unbearable sadness in their marrow and how they transform it, like the existentially distressed but heroically steadfast men men they are, into a terrible and lionhearted joy."

Known for their literally non-stop kinetic live shows, which utilize a variety of more traditional musical instruments like the accordion, the Moog keyboard and the xylophone, as well as incorporating often overlooked noisemakers like soup pots, shoes, a fire extinguisher and squeaky toys, Man Man have floored crowds around the world on tour with indie darlings such as Cat Power, Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse.

The exuberantly schizophrenic Man Man move, sometimes seamlessly and sometimes in intentional fits and starts, between genres and sounds on their recordings as freely as they change instruments during their live shows. Spin opines "often sinister, occasionally busting out some doo-wop, and on one track accompanied by a chorus of kindergartners, Man Man is a refreshing breath amid today's polluted airwaves," and Prefix magazine states "Man Man's music will irritate you, make you laugh, put you off and then bring you back for more. It is in this conflict that the band exists and succeeds so well."
Man Man are currently finalizing the recording of their Anti-debut. Expect the brilliantly unexpected in spring 2008.
