Katy Kirby Shares New Track “Party Of The Century”

Today Katy Kirby is sharing “Party of the Century”, the latest track from her highly anticipated sophomore album ’Blue Raspberry.’ Featuring clips of Katy relaxing and hanging out with her friends and bandmates in front of a glittering background, listen to the song and watch its new lyric video.

"I wrote “Party of the Century” on FaceTime with my friend Christian Lee Hutson, just kinda haphazardly sending lyrics we’d saved in our respective notes.,” Kirby said of the song’s creation. “It turned into a sort of slow-danceable, semi-sweet love song about seeking connection when it feels like the chaos is probably never going to stop. It’s kind of also about physics and anti-natalism, and climate change, and also how much we love our friends. When we recorded it, I asked my band to try to make it sound like an Ed Sheeran song, which they refused to do."

“Party of the Century” is the third song to be released from ‘Blue Raspberry,’ coming out January 26. Said FLOOD on the debut single “Cubic Zirconia”: “The pop-infused track is built around bouncy and twinkling piano melodies, a drum groove highlighted by smoky cymbal work, and a guitar part that features slides up and down the fretboard. Kirby’s voice sounds as confident as ever, equal parts beautiful and powerful.”
‘Blue Raspberry’ follows Kirby’s acclaimed debut album ‘Cool Dry Place,’ which was also recorded in Nashville and released in February of 2021. While the songs on that record unfold amidst Kirby finding her voice, ‘Blue Raspberry’ is a polished and confident sophomore effort that deepens the questions that bubbled through ‘Cool Dry Place’ about how people can reach each other despite all the hazard zones where human connection caves in.

Originally from Spicewood, Texas, Kirby was living in Nashville when she started writing ‘Blue Raspberry'’s title track, the first of the album's songs to take shape. "'Blue Raspberry' is the oldest song on the record. I began to write it a month or so before I realized, I think I’m queer," she says. "There’s a tradition of yearning in country love songs. I like the male yearning songs better, usually. I started writing 'Blue Raspberry,' and I was thinking about, if I was in love with a woman, what would I love about her? Especially if she was someone that I couldn’t touch, but that I was pining for. What would I be caught on? And I thought that I would probably be particularly charmed by the choices she made on how to look after she woke up in the morning.  I thought about tackiness, and the ways that’s a dirty word. That’s where the title comes from -- loving someone for those choices, for the artificiality."

Just after the album’s January release next year Kirby will embark on a nationwide tour that begins in Washington DC on February 3 and wraps around the country, ending back on the East coast at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on March 8. All upcoming dates are listed below.
