THE BOOK OF KNOTS SIGNS TO ANTI- New York-based Collective Readies March 2007 Label Debut Traineater Boasts Cameos from Tom Waits, Mike Watt, David Thomas, Jon Langford and Carla Bozulich
Anti- is pleased to announce the signing of New York City-based heavy, beautiful, dark, slow, melancholy collective THE BOOK OF KNOTS. Traineater, set for a March 2007 release, is touted as “a tribute to the American Rust Belt” by the quartet which consists of Matthias Bossi (Skeleton Key, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), Joel Hamilton (Sparklehorse, Elvis Costello, Unsane), Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, Frank Black, They Might Be Giants) and Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat Trio, Tom Waits, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and 2 Foot Yard).
Lyrically inspired, the group paints a haunting modern day portrayal of the United States’ once fabled but now crumbling promised land, focusing on “the creaking girders, rusting chains, and grinding gears” of the American Rust-Belt,. Depicting cities like Cleveland, Youngstown, Toledo, and Detroit – all places that once were the definition of American motivation, progress and industry – Traineater chronicles the ruined monuments of an era gone by.
Aimed at fans of speaker-bending doom rock, the foursome’s “maximalist” orchestral production is informed by scraping and swirling guitars, soaring string arrangments, rupturing bass, and plate-shattering drums.
Boasting guests like Tom Waits, Mike Watt, David Thomas, Jon Langford and Carla Bozulich in the roles of foremen, assembly linemen and pensioners and giving telling accounts of the neglected mining and steel towns they’re linked to. Traineater promises to be one of the most ear-opening releases of 2007.
