Watch: Calexico's Video For "Falling From The Sky"

NEW ALBUM EDGE OF THE SUN

OUT NOW ON ANTI-/ CITY SLANG

Calexico released their new album Edge of The Sun last week to critical acclaim, with the Los Angeles Times calling it, "as engaging and sophisticated as anything in their rich catalog," and today they've shared the video for the single "Falling From The Sky" featuring Ben Bridwell with Pitchfork http://pitchfork.com/tv/13-music-videos/1399-calexico-falling-from-the-sky/

The video was directed by Mikel Cee Karlsson (Jose Gonzalez, Fever Ray, Junip) who explained the making of the video writing:

The idea for this video have been lingering for a while, ever since I saw Albin Karlsson and Björn Renner´s worm-like creation made for a show at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm. In original form, the "worm" was strictly covered in black leather. But I wanted to make it more like a living thing, like an evolutionary side step, a creature that is stuck in it´s codependency and has rather few possibilities in this world but still has the capacity to dream of better things.

I also had the idea that I wanted to make a two part video on the same story and tell it from two different perspectives.

When I heard Calexico´s "Falling from the sky" I felt that I heard the perspective of the creature, or rather the perspective of anyone who find themselves in a similar mindset or situation.

So, this video is actually part I of II, or more precisely perspective I of II of this relationship.

The second video created for Jose Gonzalez (who is also featured in this video) will be featured as a stand alone video and will be out soon.

"It's too early to tag Edge Of The Sun as the band's masterpiece, but song for song, it's the most textured and dimensional Calexico record" -- NPR

"As restless as ever, the band is pushing at expectations, exploring without repeating. The result is as engaging and sophisticated as anything in their rich catalog." -- LA Times

"Edge of the Sun sounds newly invigorated and inspired as Calexico reconsider their own past and find new music to explore." -- Pitchfork

"At its best, the music on "Edge of the Sun" is retro, modern and timeless." -- Associated Press

"Calexico sounds best when it does what it's always done: Tell stories, translate the American Southwest into song, and have a damn good time doing it. And these are the best bits of Edge Of The Sun." -- The AV Club

"Recording in Mexico City, they've turned nearly every track here into a collaboration, jumping from Dylan-esque country to cumbia to spaghetti-Western to mariachi to ska, and by the time they've finished, they've managed to write one of the hookiest, most-satisfying albums of their career."

-- Magnet

"...the Arizona ensemble has swerved through freewheeling detours into indie rock, Tex-Mex, and Americana, with flourishes of jazz, soul, and country along the way. "Edge of the Sun," the band's new album on Anti-, is no less adventurous, but it feels curated in a way that sets it apart from previous releases." -- Boston Globe

"Building a cohesive album from such eclectic source material is no easy task, but Calexico, drawing on the 25-year partnership between Burns and multi-instrumentalist John Convertino, put on a clinic."

-- Consequence of Sound

*w/ The Decemberists

For the better part of two decades, the acclaimed band Calexico has crossed musical barriers, embracing a multitude of styles, variety in instrumentation, and well-cultivated signature sounds. Their new album, Edge of the Sun, takes inspiration from a trip to a place surprisingly unexplored by the band before in Mexico City, and with the benefit of many friends and comrades to help guide the way.

Collaborators on the album include Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Nick Urata (Devotchka), Carla Morrison, Gaby Moreno, Amparo Sanchez, multi-instrumentalists from the Greek band Takim, and Neko Case. Burns' brother John Burns lent a hand to some lyrics and songwriting, and the band's keyboardist, Sergio Mendoza, stepped up to co-write and arrange certain songs, ultimately co-producing the album along with Burns, John Convertino, and longtime associate Craig Schumacher.
